DESIGN DIRECTION

My design perception for this book centered on the concept of time as smoke—ephemeral and shifting, either lingering or dissipating depending on perspective. Cigarettes, an essential part of the main character’s identity, became a key visual motif, reinforcing the narrative’s themes. The credits spread features cigarette smoke seamlessly blending into the book’s primary color palette, emphasizing the fleeting nature of time. To enhance this idea, the overall design embraces a bright, airy aesthetic, creating a deliberate contrast to the book’s intensely vivid and dynamic colors. This juxtaposition not only complements the storytelling but also allows the visual experience to mirror the character’s world—one where moments drift like smoke, both lingering and vanishing in an instant.

To deepen this exploration, the chapter break pages visually contrasted the mortal character’s growth with the static presence of the immortal being. As the story progressed, the mortal character subtly aged and changed, while the immortal remained unchanged, reinforcing the fragility of human life against the vast, unyielding force of nature and time
